  • Flower-based switzel with Linda Brennan

    10am-12.30pm. Fermented drinks are all the go, as they provide wonderful support for the gut and digestion. Switzel, also known as Shrub, is an age old drink that’s super easy to make and can be created from a variety of fruit flavours you’ll have in your home orchard or herb garden, (and sometimes your flower garden too). Learn how to make a seasonal switzel that is delicious and surprisingly good for you too. Morning tea included. Enjoy the surrounds of our Sustainability Centre in Carindale. $5 per person, pre-booking required (via link above). This workshop is supported by the Brisbane City Council Cultivating Community Gardens Grant.

    Enjoy a dinner to celebrate another year in conservation as Professor Darryl Jones hosts a not-to-be-missed conversation with three generations of devoted environmentalists: Ecology Honours Student and Senior PASS Leader for Griffith University, Cara Parsons; 2018 Young Australian Environmental Lawyer of the Year, Revel Pointon; and Enterprise Professor of Environmentalism for Melbourne University, Professor Don Henry AM. And bring along a burning question of your own! Hosted by Wildlife Queensland.
  • Common Myna Humane Reduction Workshop

    myna birdCome and learn how can you help to control Common Myna impacts. This workshop will explain how to identify this bird, how to report your sightings and how you can start trapping in your own backyard. After attending this event, participants interested in trapping can borrow a cage and learn how to set it up. Common Mynas were listed among 100 of the world’s worst invasive species by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in 2000. In Australia, they threaten native biodiversity due to their territorial behaviours and nest cavity competition. FREE but bookings required (via above link). Light refreshments provided.   • Worn Out? 2018

    Expressions of interest are invited for the upcoming exhibition, ‘Worn OUT?’ - deadline 20 August. A great way to celebrate the #WaronWaste. The exhibition focuses on upcycled wearable art and consist of two discrete showcases, Refashion and Cosplay. The exhibition will be launched with a free opening event featuring a runway show for each of the showcases and will continue to run with a static display of selected Refashion garments, Cosplay outfits and accessories.

  • Ecology in the Anthropocene - ESA18

    ESA18 runs from 25-29 November 2018. Optional workshops and field trips will be offered on Friday 30 November. Some field trips may be overnight. Australia’s ecologists are meeting Brisbane in November for the Ecological Society of Australia’s annual meeting. The theme is Ecology in the Anthropocene, reflecting the era of great tribulation and yet great opportunity in which we live.
    The early bird rate closes 14 September.

From 9.30am Darryl will be talking about innovations in road ecology - getting our native critters from A to B safely! We also have a book swap stand, Boomerang Bags and natural honey for sale.   • Cane toad busting night

    We're gathering toads that will be used to create the poison that is used in the baits for traps (part of the Cane Toad Challenge program). This will be a family-friendly event that will involve using torches to locate the toads. A BCC contractor will collect the captured toads on the night and freeze and process them for UQ. Location TBA soon.
