  • Sustainability Centre Open Day

    Saturday, Jun 3, 2017 9:00am
Sustainability Centre, Cnr Wright St & Old Cleveland Rd, Carindale
War on Waste interview with Craig Reucassel9am-11.30m. Presentation at 9.30am. Guest speaker is sustainability consultant Jane Milburn of Textile Beat. Jane (pictured right with Craig Reucassel for War on Waste TV series) is a leader in sustainability and upcycling. She's a sustainability consultant and agricultural scientist, creatively making a real difference and getting others to jump on board. In an interview with the ABC, Jane said that our “fast and furious lifestyles” have brought us to a point where 6,000 kg of clothing is going into landfill every 10 minutes in Australia. "In the rush to own things for reasons of status and looks, we lose the opportunity to be mindful and resource by making and creating from materials that already exist,” Jane said. (full article). She has an interesting and varied background. Jane has worked with the Australian banana industry and had various executive roles with the Rural Press Club of QLD including President. In 2013 she established Textile Beat - a social enterprise embracing natural fibres and upcycling. It is concerned with a range of issues including pollution of our oceans from micro plastics off clothing fabrics. Jane definitely walks the talk! In 2014 she ran a project called Sew It Again in which she upcycled an item of clothing and blogged it every day for a whole year. Jane helps people get hands-on - holding workshops for Home Economics teachers, hosting clothing repair cafes at Reverse Garbage and growing awareness of the creative ways others are making a difference. Come along to our Open Day, meet others who care about the world, find out more about what we do and how you can get involved. Morning tea provided (gold coin donation or free for B4C members).
