Queensland Rail – Pritchard Street Ecological Restoration

Thanks to the support of Queensland Rail, B4C has been able to restore a vital section of the wildlife corridor linking Wynnum Wetlands to Sandy Camp Road Wetland Reserve.

The Pritchard Street project focused on ecological restoration through strategic weed control, extensive native planting, and ongoing site management. A total of 880 native plants have been established, supported by 140 hours of preparation and 196 hours of maintenance to assist site recovery.

Weed species such as Leucaena, Glycine, Singapore daisy, Broadleaf pepper, Chinese Celtis, Lantana, Groundsel, Para grass, Dyschoriste, and Asparagus vine were systematically targeted to make way for native vegetation.

This important corridor supports a diverse range of birdlife, including honeyeaters and fairy-wrens.

Key restoration activities included:

  • Planting of Melaleucas, sedges, grasses, and koala food trees.
  • Use of tree guards, with 200 plants protected using stakes and guards.
  • Dense planting in wetland areas to support frog habitat restoration.
  • Application of soil conditioners and mulching, with drilling and pad creation to promote planting success.

Community engagement has been a valued part of this project. A corporate planting day with Queensland Rail staff resulted in 300 native species being planted, with follow-up watering and maintenance provided by the B4C team.

This project highlights the importance of sustained site management, community involvement, and targeted habitat improvements to enhance biodiversity and support long-term ecological health.
