Recently, we had the opportunity to forge a valuable relationship with Do-Op Shop and two inspiring women, Nina Sands and Ash Hinze, who are taking on fast fashion and textile waste head-on through their bustling social enterprise, Do-Op Shop.
Do-Op Shop channels proceeds from their profits to support various causes dear to the local community. In July, they raised an impressive $2,850 for the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C). These funds will help B4C host a series of community workshops and presentations for both children and adults. The sessions will focus on the wildlife and ecology of the Bulimba Creek catchment and surrounding areas, including topics such as living with and supporting the local koala population, protecting freshwater ecosystems, and birdwatching.
Do-Op Shop has three local stores: one in Morningside, one in Annerley, and the recently opened location in Wynnum. The vision of Do-Op Shop is to create an environment that supports, engages, and empowers community connection. Their mission is to provide all community members, regardless of their situation, background, or nationality, with a retail store and a safe community space that is welcoming, affordable, engaging, and friendly.
Excitingly, Do-Op Shop will be featured in this year’s Brisbane Fashion Festival! They are the first independent charity op-shop to be included on the runway. You can catch Do-Op Shop hitting the runway on Wednesday, 28th August at 7 pm. Although the event is booked out, there are still tickets up for grabs. Buy a pledge in-store to enter the draw, with each pledge being a $5 donation towards Do-Op Shop’s $15,000 goal to help Ocean Crusaders clean up the Brisbane River.
