2024 was an exceptionally busy and rewarding year for B4C. Our team has grown, and together, we hosted and co-hosted over 55 events across the catchment (and beyond). Our diverse projects spanned conservation efforts at Mt Barney, Mt Elliot, Gibson Island, and Metroplex Wetlands, with initiatives to restore habitats and actively engage the community.
In 2024, our Landcare Services Unit (LSU) worked across more than 110 sites. Operating as a non-for-profit social enterprise, the LSU helps ensure the ongoing sustainability of the organisation.
B4C worked with 940 volunteers across corporate, community, and school events. Our volunteers contributed approximately 3781 volunteer hours to bushland restoration and B4C’s volunteer-run nursery propagated approximately 15,000 plants.
In addition, volunteers made a substantial contribution to various catchment group activities beyond bushland restoration, amassing an estimated 13,122 hours of volunteer work. These efforts spanned committee meetings, educational activities, office support, event organising, and more.
As a grassroots community organisation, we would not be who we are without our dedicated volunteers and members. A special thank you goes to those who work in the nursery, across Bushcare sites, in our office, and to the creative team of Re-made at B4C volunteers.
We are incredibly grateful for the invaluable support of our partners and supporters, including SEQ Water, Powerlink, and Brisbane City Council. A special thank you to Visy, Energex, Incitec Pivot, Port of Brisbane P/L, Qld Bulk Handling P/L, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Queensland Urban Utilities, Fortescue Future Industries, the Dept of Natural Resources, Mines and Powerlink Qld, APA Group, New Hope Group, Brisbane Catchments Network Inc, and Do Opshop for their continued support.
We extend our gratitude to Watergum, Accenture, the dedicated staff at Shell, Seymour Whyte, Brisbane City Council, SEQWater, the Cubberla-Witton Catchments Network, Iona College, Space Frame, McIlwain, Expert Education, Oxley Creek Catchment Association, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Toyota, Deloitte, and Fulton Hogan for their ongoing support.
New and strengthened partnerships have enabled us to uphold our commitment to ongoing initiatives while expanding into new projects. This includes launching a new bushcare group at Passerine Park, regenerating the Metroplex Wetlands in Murrarie, and hosting a series of family and children’s workshops through the Queensland Government’s Engaging Science Grants program.
This year, key highlights included a wide variety of environmental and community initiatives, including cane toad busts, butterfly surveys, community planting days, habitat restoration projects, and clean-up events at key locations like Gibson Island and Minnippi. Educational workshops on topics such as biomimicry and bioblitz walks, alongside strong corporate partnerships, further supported our mission to enhance biodiversity, sustainability, and hands-on conservation efforts across Brisbane.
We also continued vital work at the Mount Barney and Mount Elliot conservation properties, managed B4C property leases and permits for Landcare activities in the Bulimba Creek Catchment, advanced the Upper Tingalpa Creekcare program, and provided support to the Yimbun and Conondale Bushcare groups, as well as our Industrial Landcare program.
