As we kick off 2025, we want to spotlight an outstanding volunteer. Leigh Weakley was named the 2024 B4C Volunteer of the Year for his valuable contributions to both our environment and community.
Leigh, our Volunteer Nursery Manager and a former member of Native Plants Queensland, brings more than ten years of expertise in native plant propagation to B4C. But more importantly, he plays a pivotal role in our community and is a key reason why B4C’s Sustainability Centre has become a thriving community hub. Leigh dedicates three days a week—often more—to managing the nursery and training a diverse team of over 20 volunteers each week.
His leadership goes beyond gardening tasks. Leigh carefully organises various activities in the nursery and gardens, helping volunteers choose tasks that boost their skills and understanding of native plant care. His efforts are vital in propagating and planting local native species, which are essential for the health and resilience of our local ecosystems.
Leigh’s friendly and supportive approach ensures that everyone enjoys positive social interactions and gains a deeper appreciation of our natural surroundings.
In addition to his nursery duties, Leigh plays a crucial role in education. He assists about 60 participants from the Skilling Queenslanders programme each year, mentors over 20 university students, and leads community workshops on plant propagation, identification, and health.
Also a Heart Foundation Walk Organiser, Leigh’s wide-ranging activities show how dedicated volunteer leadership can profoundly impact environmental sustainability and community well-being. Leigh truly deserves the accolade of B4C Volunteer of the Year.
