We are thrilled to celebrate Gary King, a dedicated member of both B4C and the White Hill Pine Mountain Community Group, as B4C’s 2024 Environmental Educator of the Year.
Gary has facilitated diverse environmental education workshops at B4C on topics ranging from worm farming and composting to native bees and carnivorous plants. His commitment extends to leading Family Guided Nature Walks at Whites Hill Reserve and organizing Bio-blitzes at B4C’s Sustainability Centre. Gary led B4C’s Great Cane Toad Busts in 2024 and 2025, as well as the Whites Hill Reserve Koala Counts. His advocacy efforts also include passionate support for the Australian Conservation Foundation.
Since relocating to Brisbane from Canada in 2019, Gary has been an active member of the Whites Hill Pine Mountain Community Group and the Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordination Committee (B4C), where he was honoured with the B4C Environmentalist of the Year Award in 2021. His small business Ibis Education is dedicated to fostering environmental awareness among schools, church communities, guides, scouts, and other groups.
A certified Queensland educator with over 30 years of teaching experience, Gary’s background spans from being a classroom teacher to serving as a school principal for 12 years. After retiring in 2013, he held positions such as Director, Secretary, and Chair of the Niagara Land Trust and was involved in environmental initiatives in Niagara, including school tours and local guiding.
Gary’s teaching expertise covers French, history, geography, and science, but his true passion lies in environmental and outdoor education. Throughout his career, he has led outdoor educational schools, schoolyard naturalisation projects, and nature club events, aiming to deepen both children’s and adults’ appreciation of the natural world around them. We are indeed fortunate to have such a dedicated educator and environmentalist in our community.
